Before the end of June add your post here sharing information about the BP oil spill in the Gulf and, more importantly, post letting people know about how they can help with the containment and clean up efforts.

From volunteer opportunities to donation links, please share anything you are aware of that will allow people to get involved and minimize the effects of this disaster.

The Gulf is an example of the damage we are doing to our environment. The oceans are a critical part of our food chain. Destruction to them, means destruction to humanity. Finger pointing does little good. Though it is time for us to step up and say, “Enough is Enough.”

Let’s put some teeth into all this talk about fossil fuel alternatives. The supply of crude oil is limited. Governments have the power to save this planet, though it will not be done if we continue down the path we currently are on.

Blog about alternatives. Add an Action Badge. Sign the Petition. Get Your Readers Involved. Tell the Government to do what they did when we wen’t to the moon. Say “we will become fossil fuel independent by 2020.” Tough challenges, calls for tough leadership and tough people. We will either pay the price now, or our children will pay it later.

The sea life in the Gulf have no voice and are already paying for our gross negligence. It’s time for Real Change. “Enough is Enough.” Environmental agencies are pandering to D.C. because they feel Obama is their best option.

Well, nothing great ever came out of Washington DC. Everything great started with a small group of people. Do not wait until it’s too late. The fate of this planet and what we hand to our kids is in our hands.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles continues to insist that no massive underwater oil plumes in “large concentrations” have been detected from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Suttles’ comments came Wednesday morning on network news shows, a day after the government said water tests confirmed underwater oil plumes from the oil spill, but that concentrations are “very low.”

Suttles told NBC’s “Today” show that it “may be down to how you define what a plume is here.”

NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco said Tuesday that the tests conducted at three sites by a University of South Florida research vessel confirmed oil as far as 3,300 feet below the surface 42 miles northeast of the well site.

Meredith Vieira was hardhitting with her questions to Doug Suttles, probing him around the fact that BP still doesn’t know how much oil is leaking, and asking if the company is playing games on the advice of its legal team.

I’m a Gulf Coast Floridian presently working in Michigan; and I want you to know that regardless of what you think about egg on faces, I’ve got some peculiar feelings.

The symptoms have included throat irritation, coughs, chest pains, intense stress headaches, the inability to sleep or concentrate without being redirected unconsciously to the Gulf Oil Disaster; and anxiety like panic strickening shortness of breath.

Amazingly I’ve also had an unexplained urge to fly to nola and get frisky with Tony Hayward. So Doug, Can You Make My Symptoms Magically Go Away with your claims of Egg ?  and fyi – I’m totally allergic to eggs so you won’t find any in my kitchen friend.

I know you are like most people Now Doug and you don’t like going to the Doctor. We want to reassure you and make this as painless for you as possible.  you may take this as a personal attack, but rest assured it is not. you are just the closest we’ve come to someone from BP who seems willing to talk at all about what’s really going on. plus you are such a smart guy, that we kinda want to hope that you will put some actuality into this picture.

We’re not here to attack you but to ask you, why does BP want to confuse the facts, and the people of America ?

That’s a relatively simple question. probably much simpler than the one Meredith Vierra asked you and you still can’t, won’t, haven’t (select your choice Doug) Answered yet.

We don’t want to lump you in with Sarah Palin and her convo about the spill but you’ve got to talk more sensibly to us, especially now that we can see more than a million barrels a day have been escaping for 50+ days.

If we were to just assume that you can speak for BP that wouldn’t be fair to You or BP.   So we’re hoping that you will respond to us as you responded to Barbara – in the comments.

We promise to keep it civil and to really listen to what you want us to know.

We don’t expect BP to walk away and we don’t expect BP to stand down on their word. We’d just like to get a little clearer on what exactly you think is fair in how to handle the clean up;  inlight of the present 2 months of disaster we are all observing come to a head today. We’re Not as cute as Anderson Cooper and we certainly don’t have as many viewers, but we still think we’re important in the larger sense – especially if you want to dispell the feeling that - BP Lies, and The Gulf Dies..

Oh and about that Truth thing, that Really Is Our Name – AUSET, It Translates to Truth, Literally.

The spill is believed to be America’s worst environmental disasterAs many as 40,000 barrels (1.7 million gallons) of oil a day may have been gushing out from a blown-out Gulf of Mexico well, doubling many estimates.

The US Geological Survey says that flow rate could have been reached before a cap was put on the well on 3 June.

Oil has been leaking into the Gulf since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on 20 April and sank off the coast of the US state of Louisiana, killing 11 workers.

BP said the device placed on the well collected 15,800 barrels of oil on Wednesday – slightly up on the 15,010 barrels collected in the previous 24-hour period.

New estimates for the oil spill prior to 3 June follow an assessment by a team of scientists put together by the US government and coordinated by the US Geological Survey.

“The lowest estimate that we’re seeing that the scientists think is credible is probably about 20,000 barrels, and the highest that we’re seeing is probably a little over 40,000,” said Marcia McNutt, director of the US Geological Survey.

The new estimates are staggering and only add to BP’s woes, the BBC’s Andy Gallacher in Florida says.

The British oil giant has estimated that up to 19,000 barrels a day was leaking from the ruptured well before they managed to partially contain the spill.

Last month, BP was estimating the leak to be the equivalent of just over 5,000 barrels per day.

“This is a nightmare that keeps getting worse every week,” said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, America’s oldest environmental organisation.

“We’re finding out more and more information about the extent of the damage… Clearly we can’t trust BP’s estimates of how much oil is coming out.”

‘Lack of integrity’

Relations between BP and the White House are now more strained than ever, our correspondent reports.

Reuters reports that Actor and environmentalist Robert Redford has weighed in on the U.S. oil spill crisis, condemning efforts by major energy companies to promote their environmental credentials and use their money to influence “their parrots in Congress.”

In a five-minute YouTube video, produced by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Redford says the worst oil spill in U.S. history should serve as a lesson for Americans to move away from their dependence on oil and pursue alternative energy like wind and solar power.

“I think it is time for the American people to take charge of their own livelihood and say, let’s stop this and let’s move to a clean energy policy,” the “Out of Africa” star says in the video “The Fix” released on Thursday.

Redford, 73, who is also an NRDC trustee, said “green” advertising campaigns by BP, and Chevron’s “Human Energy” slogan made him “want to throw up”.

In a video featuring photos and TV footage of the six week long oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, the Oscar-winning director accused big oil companies of being in collusion with U.S. politicians.

He urged Americans to “stop listening to the self-interested propaganda of the oil companies and their parrots in Congress”.

We also found out this week that BP had purchased the tag OILSPILL from Google. Yeah Bloody Right…. wonder why ? notice the bloody oil spill  crossing the boom around the peninsula; which is at one of the  Passes closed this weekend in Mississippi – due to the Oil.

That sounds sooooo fishy; especially coming from BP.  Everything they’ve said up to this point has proven to be  shady.  so why should this lil deal be any different ?   They’re hopefully going to use this tag to help repair life in the Gulf States and the Gulf itself.  That’s why we’re showing you the oil crossing the boom.  Sadly, We fully expect it to play out exactly that way with BP.  As we can all see, they are slippery.

It appears that the pressure on Congress has pointed them to start the move toward demanding an escrow account  be established by BP. Specifically for the money owed to fishermen, and others directly damaged by the oil spill.  Hopefully it’s going into action soon. Trust us the people who’s livelyhoods were destroyed needed it 50 days ago Tony.

Reuters Reports that BP has bought terms such as “oil spill” from search engine providers including Google Inc to help direct Internet users to its website as it attempts to control the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

A spokesman said BP would pay fees so its own website would rank higher or even top in the list of results when Internet users search on terms such as “oil spill,” “volunteer” and “claims.”

BP did not say how much it was paying for the service but President Barack Obama has criticised the company for spending $50 million on TV advertising to bolster its image during the crisis.

BP said it wanted to help people who were trying to access information on the BP website to find it more readily, rather than intending to draw away hits from other sites.

“We know people are looking for those terms on our website and we’re just trying to make it easier for them to get directly to those terms,” the spokesman told Reuters.

That sounds like another Parody, so we found this little parody to match it up. This is another joke about BP and the spill from some professional comics.  It’s Gone Viral and is burning up the internets – It’s called “The Coffee Spill”. It’s to me the closest demonstration of what’s happened down there since the spill, sadly.

But groups such as the National Physicians for Social Responsibility and Citizen Awareness Network say that tritium, like other radionuclides, is a serious threat to the health of humans and the environment.

Tritium, which is a beta emitter, causes cancer and birth defects, said Ira Helfand, a doctor at Cooley Dickinson in Northampton, Mass., and the co-founder and a former president of National Physicians for Social Responsibility

Helfand’s biggest concern is that tritium can cross the placental barrier. This was confirmed in animal studies, as documented by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation.

“Several statistically significant effects were found at various (tritium) levels, in no apparent relationship with dose,” it stated. “These included microcephaly (shrunken heads, also observed at Hiroshima), sterility, stunting, reduction of the litter size, …”

Our Friends at Greenpeace further posted a warning in europe on the Tritium releases from a leaking nuclear power plant in Romania

International environmental organisation Greenpeace presented a study on tritium emissions [1] from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. It commissioned the study from the international tritium expert Dr. Ian Fairlie from the United Kingdom. The study recommends that pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children (under 4) should not live within 10 kilometres of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, and that people living within 5 kilometres should not consume food from their gardens, beehives, orchards, and wild foods growing nearby.

[1] Tritium is the radioactive form of hydrogen. It is generated in very large amounts in CANDU reactors because of neutron radiation of heavy water – an essential part of these reactors. This is about the Release of Radiation and why the plant operators lie – this is in california in 1960 – so we know they are covering up much more now.

Notice that between 5:10 and 6:00 they talk about the chemicals that are released AS STEAM. then they talk about how the Body Retains These Chemicals in the Bones, and the Teeth. YES the Body Absorbs these chemicals and years later we see often the results – cancer.  Water is the agent that is carrying the Tritium and we all have to drink water to live.

Exelon Nuclear’s 10 generating stations and 17 reactors in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions achieved an average capacity factor of 93.6% in 2009, the seventh consecutive year our capacity factor exceeded 93%, and produced about 131.3 million megawatt-hours of electricity, enough power to steadily supply millions of modern U.S. homes.  For 2008, the average outage duration was 24 days, compared to an industry average of 40 days.

Spooks leaving Sour grapes comments  from companies who have been found complicit in The Dumping of Nuclear Tainted Water like Exelon Corporation; won’t make us stop reporting The TRUTH. When Nuclear Energy is managed safely and plants are maintained properly – there are benefits. yet corporations like the owners of Philadephia Electric and Gas; who also own Oyster Creek Nuclear - refuse to put the profits into making the plants safely contribute to the communities they serve; and can be found clearly guilty of being Toxic Terrorists by dumping Tritium into our water systems.

it’s incredible and amazing all at once, the way social networking has impacted our world; and the younger generation. most of our kids don’t remember anything before the internet.  I remember when I was a grad student working on the aarapnet project; wondering what it would look like one day. when it all began, it was all a mass of  numbers. yes not a graphic in sight.   windows 3.1 was the first actual mass produced operating system; which tells you a whole lot.  today we’re giving you two funnies to enjoy.

UPS encourages workers to help in crises like Haiti quake

It was one of many poignant moments for Arnold, who has been volunteering with the Salvation Army in Port-au-Prince since Jan. 15, three days after the massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit. The sales director for UPS’ Northern California region, whose parents spent 42 years as Salvation Army officers, is continuing his family’s and his company’s tradition of service by helping get food, water, medicine and other supplies to people affected by the earthquake. His sales training for UPS’ logistics and supply chain consulting has been invaluable.

“Whenever a crisis occurs, logistics is the first thing that needs addressing,” says Ed Martinez, director of philanthropy and corporate relations for the UPS Foundation in Atlanta.

UPS says it urges its employees to volunteer during natural disasters and other crises. Along with executives who, like Arnold, have their own relationships with charities, the company has a 20-person Logistics Emergency Team in Asia, Europe and the Americas that is trained in humanitarian relief. Team members perform “skill-based volunteering” while still earning their pay.

Team members Bill Torres, UPS’ compliance coordinator for the Americas, and John Vera, health and safety manager in the region, are spending the next six weeks in the Dominican Republic setting up a distribution center for the World Food Programme‘s efforts for Haiti.

In Haiti, Arnold’s base is the Salvation Army’s headquarters, a compound that makes up about four city blocks and had a 15-foot wall with razor wire around it before the earthquake hit. It was a haven in a frequently violent neighborhood for the 1,000 members of the Salvation Army church, 700 students at its school and 52 children at the children’s home, La Maison du Bonheur. “My immediate concern was with them and what I could do to help,” Arnold says. “None of the children were badly injured or killed. … It’s truly a miracle.”

Some were missing for a few days, though. One, a girl of about 16, was in a local hospital with minor injuries and had been unable to make contact. A sibling, who was walking home with her from another school when the earthquake hit, was killed.

Before the earthquake, the compound had a clinic with one doctor and a few nurses whose jobs were primarily first aid and handing out medications. After the earthquake, it became an emergency room, thanks to 12 doctors who flew in soon after the earthquake. They saw more than 100 patients in the first two hours. In five days, there were five births and several amputations, Arnold says.

Because so many amputations were done quickly after the earthquake, doctors at the compound are correcting some of the amputations and performing “after care” to prevent infections, using painkillers when available.

“They triage in the playground, and the worst cases end up in the Coleman tent,” Arnold says.

Because of his logistics training, Arnold spends a lot of time at the Port-au-Prince airport helping to unload planes with supplies and making sure aid gets to where it’s most needed as quickly as possible. It’s not always fast enough.

Arnold and a Swiss Army veteran were working with other volunteers last week to find morphine for an amputation being performed at the clinic. They met with one of the United Nations‘ agencies and were able to get some to the clinic, “But by the time that happened, the amputation had already happened,” Arnold says wistfully.

Because the walls of the compound were so “compromised” by the earthquake, Arnold says, thousands of people walk through every day, heading to a soccer stadium where the U.N. estimates at least 12,000 are sleeping. “They ask for food and water every day,” Arnold says. “It’s very difficult to say you can’t do that. If you start with a very small distribution, it will get very ugly, very quickly.”

He says the Salvation Army’s long relationship with the community — the compound has been there since 1960 — has helped bolster efforts to get food and medical care to the residents in a somewhat orderly fashion.

One day last week, Arnold helped volunteers feed 10,000 people without incident. Arnold says he’s working with others to figure out how to repeat the success on a regular basis.

Arnold, who is using vacation time to volunteer, expects to be in Port-au-Prince through this week or until the Salvation Army can find someone to replace him. The experience has been full of highs and lows. For example, he says it was “extremely challenging for me not to break down” when the young resident of the children’s home offered him her water bottle.

“It’s definitely been a life-changing experience,” Arnold says. He’s seen “some things that are horrifying” but is awed by how the Haitians’ “spirit has still been strong, how they don’t give up and how they are still helping each other.”

The American Red Cross has raised $26 million through text messages as of Wednesday, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy. That compares with $200,000 during the 2008 hurricane season.

Infact it’s the software that kept them out of bankruptcy.  their customer service line was open this morning.  I phoned them and they gave me a full download of the same product and a new key – because he was rude and wrong. this is why it pays to Back Up Your Downloaded Software.

According to their FAQ it’s your responsibility. meaning if you loose it, they don’t really have to help you with a new download.  stupid – but that’s the way of the download software market today. they’re there today and tomorrow POOF !

This is why as a consumer today – you have to cover each corner; Because no-one knows you after they have your money.

The funniest moments are when they are on the catwalk before the judges. around the 25:00 mark you get to see the reality of how badly they want to be able to Shante’.  Uh Huh I said Shante‘.

when I began watching some of  the men in RuPaul’s Drag Race really look  alot like the women in the Real Housewives of Atlanta.  Their Hair and Make-up; Attitudes and Cattiness make it seem like a take off. I’ll have to see which show premiered first. I believe RuPaul was out there first in his limited run. the housewives are apparently in their second season.

The imagination of the men to transform themselves into such amazing looking Shemales is very creative. Women could learn alot from these guys. I know for sure their make up techniques would put a pro to shame. then to understand how they twist their man parts to create the illusion that they are flat crotched is absolutely unbelievable.

The Nina Flowers Character really amazed me with his transformation. the tatts and the wife beater, wow – he was really scary without his make up. no kidding. The Man from West Africa reminds me of one of the real housewives of Atlanta. I won’t say which one because it is apparent when you watch.

all in all this is a very entertaining look at how men transform and perform; as women. there are a few episodes so I will be writing about the next episode soon.

Dermatologist Is Father of Michael Jackson’s Kids!

It seems like all the skeletons in Michael Jackson‘s closet are slowly making their way out and into the limelight.

Earlier this morning we reported that Michael wasn’t the biological father or the sperm donor for any of his kids, and Debbie Rowe is not the biological mother of the two kids she had for Michael. She was simply used as the surrogate, and paid to carry the children to term.

Now we’re learning through Us Weekly that the biological father of Michael’s children is Arnold Klein, Jackson’s L.A.-based dermatologist and Rowe’s former boss.

“He is the dad,” says a Jackson insider. “He and Debbie signed an agreement saying they would never reveal the truth.”

Debbie admitted a few years ago that she carried his children as a “favor” to Michael, but would not confirm that the marriage was ever consummated.

According to TMZ, Michael never officially adopted his three children and although he is presumed the father, it’s not conclusive by any means.

Michael’s mother Katherine has already been granted temporary guardianship of his children, but their fate still lies in the hands of the judge. We hope this dermatologist doesn’t come out of the woodwork and try and fight for custody now that Michael has passed.

Exhibit A – The Founder Is Not A Blogger

The Entrecard founder, Graham “Adale” Langdon, claims to know what bloggers want and claims to be acting for bloggers. However, how can one make these claims when one is not a blogger himself?

Notice at the bottom how there are three “blogs” in his name. The only blog in his name that is active is the one to the far left which is the Entrecard blog. “How to NOT get Cancer” and “grahamlangdon.com” have both since been removed.

The Entrecard blog is hardly a blog at all. It is more a lesson in how to not communicate with your base.

So Graham Langdon, blogger? I don’t think so.

Hugh Pickens writes “The NY Times reports that legal and operational problems surrounding the NSA’s surveillance activities have come under scrutiny from the Obama administration, Congressional intelligence committees, and a secret national security court, and that the NSA had been engaged in ‘overcollection’ of domestic communications of Americans.

The practice has been described as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional. The Justice Department has acknowledged that there had been problems with the NSA surveillance operation, but said they had been resolved.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the intelligence community, did not address specific aspects of the surveillance problems, but said in a statement that ‘when inadvertent mistakes are made, we take it very seriously and work immediately to correct them.’

The intelligence officials said the problems had grown out of changes enacted by Congress last July to the law that regulates the government’s wiretapping powers, as well as the challenges posed by enacting a new framework for collecting intelligence on terrorism and spying suspects.

Joe Klein at Time Magazine says the bad news is that ‘the NSA apparently has been overstepping the law,’ but the good news is that ‘one of the safeguards in the [FISA Reform] law is a review procedure that seems to have the ability to catch the NSA when it’s overstepping — and that the illegal activities have been exposed, and quickly.’”

Hollywood’s Victory Over The Pirate Bay Will Be Short-Lived

From Sweden to London to Hollywood, protectors of copyrights are celebrating the conviction of the four men behind the world’s most popular torrent tracker The Pirate Bay.

The four convicted men behind The Pirate Bay — Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundstrom — say they can’t and won’t pay the $3.6 million in damages and promised the site will continue running. So much for Hollywood’s sweet victory and happy ending.

Hollywood may have won a battle, but the war against piracy is far from over. Unauthorized file-sharing will continue (and likely intensify), if not through The Pirate Bay, then through dozens of other near-identical swashbuckling Web sites.

Of course, The Pirate Bay’s case is nothing new. Eight years ago Napster was shut down after getting sued. It tried a few legal business models, but never managed to even get close to the popularity it had when it was operating illegally. The shutdown of Napster turned its creator, Shawn Fanning, and Napster into a into heroes and martyrs, inspiring others to develop new ways to pirate music.The Pirate Bay site itself is still up and running while the case is appealed.

What Hollywood needs to remember is that sites like The Pirate Bay are like weeds. When you try to kill one, they grow back even stronger. In this case, The Pirate Bay already moved most of its servers to the Netherlands, a change that could keep the site running even if The Pirate Bay loses its appeal.

The bad news for copyright-holders is there is obviously a market demand for this type of content distribution model. And while the entertainment industry seeks compensation via lawsuits, other similar services (which I do not endorse) such as Mininova, Demonoid and Torrentbox to name a few, will continue to thrive. That is, of course, until they get sued into oblivion as well. And then there are always new technologies on the horizon. Hollywood might want to start looking at a budding new peer-to-peer tool called OneSwarm that aims to let file-swappers preserve their privacy by cloaking their IP address.

Swedish Pirate Party Gains 3000 Members In 7 Hours

A court in Sweden has jailed four men behind The Pirate Bay (TPB), the world’s most high-profile file-sharing website, in a landmark case.

Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail.

They were also ordered to pay $4.5m (£3m) in damages.

Record companies welcomed the verdict but the men are to appeal and Sunde said they would refuse to pay the fine.

Speaking at an online press conference, he described the verdict as “bizarre”.

“It’s serious to actually be found guilty and get jail time. It’s really serious. And that’s a bit weird,” Sunde said.

“It’s so bizarre that we were convicted at all and it’s even more bizarre that we were [convicted] as a team. The court said we were organised. I can’t get Gottfrid out of bed in the morning. If you’re going to convict us, convict us of disorganised crime.

“We can’t pay and we wouldn’t pay. Even if I had the money I would rather burn everything I owned, and I wouldn’t even give them the ashes.”

The damages were awarded to a number of entertainment companies, including Warner Bros, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI, and Columbia Pictures.

However, the total awarded fell short of the $17.5m in damages and interest the firms were seeking.

Speaking to the BBC, the chairman of industry body the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) John Kennedy said the verdict sent out a clear message.

“These guys weren’t making a principled stand, they were out to line their own pockets. There was nothing meritorious about their behaviour, it was reprehensible.

“The Pirate Bay did immense harm and the damages awarded doesn’t even get close to compensation, but we never claimed it did.

“There has been a perception that piracy is OK and that the music industry should just have to accept it. This verdict will change that,” he said.

The four men denied the charges throughout the trial, saying that because they did not actually host any files, they were not doing anything wrong.

Speaking on Swedish Radio, assistant judge Klarius explained how the court reached its findings.

“The court first tried whether there was any question of breach of copyright by the file-sharing application and that has been proved, that the offence was committed.

“The court then moved on to look at those who acted as a team to operate the Pirate Bay file-sharing service, and the court found that they knew that material which was protected by copyright but continued to operate the service,” he said.

A lawyer for Carl Lundstrom, Per Samuelson, told journalists he was shocked by the guilty verdict and the severity of the sentence.

“That’s outrageous, in my point of view. Of course we will appeal,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. “This is the first word, not the last. The last word will be ours.”

Political issue

Rickard Falkvinge, leader of The Pirate Party – which is trying to reform laws around copyright and patents in the digital age – told the BBC that the verdict was “a gross injustice”.

“This wasn’t a criminal trial, it was a political trial. It is just gross beyond description that you can jail four people for providing infrastructure.

“There is a lot of anger in Sweden right now. File-sharing is an institution here and while I can’t encourage people to break copyright law, I’m not following it and I don’t agree with it.

“Today’s events make file-sharing a hot political issue and we’re going to take this to the European Parliament.”

The Pirate Bay is the world’s most high profile file-sharing website and was set up in 2003 by anti-copyright organisation Piratbyran, but for the last five years it has been run by individuals.

Millions of files are exchanged using the service every day.

No copyright content is hosted on The Pirate Bay’s web servers; instead the site hosts “torrent” links to TV, film and music files held on its users’ computers.

EPIC Urges FTC To Investigate Google Services

snydeq writes “The Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a 15-page complaint asking the FTC to force Google to stop offering online services that collect data until the presence of adequate privacy safeguards is verified.

The EPIC also wants Google to disclose all data loss or breach incidents, citing several incidents where data held by Google was at risk, the most recent of which occurred earlier this month with its Google Docs.

The EPIC complaint [PDF] also listed other security flaws in Gmail and Google Desktop, a desktop indexing program, and urged Google to donate $5 million to a public fund that will support research into technologies such as encryption, data anonymization and mobile location privacy.” EPIC has raised privacy concerns about Google before, and about Windows XP as well.

Do You Want Google To Have Access to Your Prescription Records?

Google just got access to millions of prescription records, and most likely, so did you.

GoogleGoogle reviews announced today that CVS/pharmacy, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the U.S., has partnered with Google Health to provide patients online access to their prescription drug history through Google Health accounts. This is in addition to Walgreens Pharmacy, Meijer, Medco, and other national pharmacies.

If you purchased prescription drugs from any of these chains, Google can access that information in its never ending goal to organize the world’s information and make it accessible and useful. But is Google having access to private prescription drug information a step too far?

For those who have not used Google Health, it currently allows you to import your medical records from over a dozen pharmacies, medical centers, and health insurance providers. Once imported, you can review those records and keep them updated, with the help of Google and its partners.

With the CVS announcement, Google now has access to the detailed prescription history information of more than 100 million patients. In addition to allowing users to access their medical history, Google also says that it will use this information and partnerships for patient safety and increasing the efficiency of health care.

This same data is also very sensitive and personal. People with a history of mental conditions and embarrassing deficiencies may now have to worry about Google using that information in statistical analysis or more (prescription drug ads anyone?). And all of this is in addition to the information Google can import from medical devices like heart rate monitors.
