I’m really into whiskey, but I think I’ll pass on tasting Gilpin Family Whisky. Why? Because this single malt whiskey is made from urine. Specifically, it’s made from the sugar rich urine of elderly diabetics.

Why elderly diabetics? Because “large amounts of sugar are excreted on a daily basis by type-two diabetic patients, especially amongst the upper end of our aging population.” That sugar is removed by purifying the urine and then added to the mash stock to accelerate the fermentation process. So yeah, it’s filtered and fermented and all that good stuff but dude, it’s still piss.

You can’t actually buy Gilpin Family Whisky because it’s given away as a public health statement. Urine as a display piece, I suppose. Gilpin Family Whisky only takes a couple of weeks to make a batch but Gilpin himself think it’s “best if it is left in the bottle for a little while.” I wonder why. Why Does America Not Get It ?

At 8:00pm et it is being reported that there is now a mile-long oil sheen spreading from the site of the Vermilion Oil Rig explosion.

“The issue is whether there is potential of any pollution, any leak. What we are hearing from Mariner Energy, the owner of the platform, is it’s a producing platform not a rig.”

The platform had not recently been in active production and was undergoing maintenance, the US Interior Department said.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said seven wells there were believed to have been active at the time of the blast.

Here we are all over again. Oil spilling out of a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.  The nasty bonus is that it’s hurricane season.. Ahhhh Yessss.

This is our latest Disaster. and regardless of how quiet they’re being right now – there is no mention of how much oil is leaking on the news yet. and yes we find that too predictable. last time they knew it was too big to hush up – but this time, well lets just see what this lil mess develops into. btw, this is a scant 100 miles from the previous oil spill disaster area.

Thank God all the people who were on the platform were safe and accounted for. but now we have to find out who is responsible for cleaning up this mess, before it gets any worse.

Who are these people – Mariner Energy ?

The Vermilion 380 oil rig is owned by Mariner Energy, whose headquarters is located in Houston, Texas.  They apparently have at least 100 platforms in this area of the Gulf of Mexico.  we wonder what their safety record shows.  we also wonder what their drilling record shows. that’s all going to be revealed by the media in due time – no doubt. lets just hope that it’s clean.

CNN and Blippit Reports are beginning to come in that there is now a mile-long oil sheen spreading from the site of the Vermilion Oil Rig explosion.

According to Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough, the oil sheen is about 100 feet wide and was spotted near the platform operated by Mariner Energy.

Three firefighting vessels have already been dispatched to the site of the explosion and one of them has engaged in fighting the blaze at this hour.

The platform of the oil rig sits in approximately 340 feet of water and lies about 100 miles south of Vermilion Bay off the Louisiana coast.  That depth is much more shallow than the 5,000+ feet where BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and spewed oil three months.

All 13 people aboard the rig were found alive and floating in the water.

Additional Reporting from Skynews tells us that:  Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal told the media: “It is too early to know what sparked the fire.”

He said the blaze was continuing but according to reports it would soon burn out.

The White House has said a government response was ready if needed.

Mr Gibbs said: “We obviously have response assets ready for deployment, should we receive reports of pollution in the water.”

Sky News’ US correspondent Greg Milam said: “You can imagine the shudder that a headline like that causes across America.

We think we’re going to go with believing Governor Jindal right now. apparently he seems to know more and have more experts who are going to check the spill out directly. He has more on the spot experience in this problem area since the BP Horizon Disaster earlier this year.

Lets just hope that the US Feds get behind this investigation IMMEDIATELY - AND NOT ALLOW ANY EVIDENCE TO BE DESTROYED THIS TIME. THIS IS AFTER ALL A CRIME Scene – AND MARINERS ENERGY NEEDS TO PAY – NOW.  No More BP Flubs DOE, Get it right this time. Our Gulf Depends On It.

I Have and trust me, after you have your first one you’ll never order one unless it’s made properly again.  Italy Ruined Me for Pizza..

I bought a mixer with dough hooks as soon as I returned home and have been using it, or my food processor to make dough eversince.

This is a fast view of just how easy it is, from the yeast folks

I do like the fact that with this yeast you can immediately dress your dough without a rise or proofing time. that makes this ideal for quick meals. I occasionally use the fastrise yeast for rolls but as of yet I’ve never used it for my pizza dough, since I like it to rise a lil bit while I work anyway.

Normally I use regular or speed rise yeast, and as yet haven’t tried the pizza yeast. if you’ve tried it please post a comment telling us how you like it.

This is what I watched when I was in Napoli sitting waiting for a pie. the guy was in an open kitchen working at record speed just like this man. watch carefully, it’s very fast and he’s a seasoned professional. no doubt he makes his living with his hands, and his oven.

Notice how he quickly fills the crust, folds it; pounds the edge flat. then he begins to fold and twist it at the edge to seal it. that makes it tight and ensures that the steam inside the crust cooks the sauce and toppings. the cheese melts evenly when the crust is puffed from the steam. you can see it when it comes from the oven hot and steaming. Deliciouso.

Notice how quickly he works and how beautiful the result is, Voila !

His construction of the Margarita Pizza was rustic and beautiful. the freshly cut tomato, the hand crumbled spinach and basil; then hand shaved peccorino cheese – oooh be still my beating heart.  notice it didn’t go back into the oven after the initial cooking. it is supposed to be fresh and crisp – unlike you normally see it served in the united states. (that’s what I mean when I said Italy ruined me for pizza)

Seeing that the last Pizza Post was so well received, we’re going to revisit it and see if we can’t get you to try a variation on your Pizza -

Lets Make Calzones

Calzones are basically stuffed pizza pockets. you put the fillings inside, fold them, crimp the edges, brush with oil and bake in a hot oven. this allows the fillings to heat while the dough rises in the hot oven. the cheese and sauce marry the fillings for an unbelievable taste treat. this is the type of finger food that anyone can learn to make. kids love them; adults love them and in fact we’ve yet to find anybody who doesn’t love them.

He Is Good – He’s Neat and He’s Doing It Right; You Go Boy !

Use a Good Flour with high gluten, like a bread flour. also use a good quality Olive Oil. I use extra virgin which has a light taste and all the health benefits.

The instructions for making Calzone are simple. in fact this video has them down perfectly if you use a food processor, which most of us bakers do. She is making a dough, pretty much like all the others it’s just that she shows you exactly how to turn that dough into Calzones.

Ahhhhhhhhh, Now We’re Cookin (wink*wink)

I like the way she tells you to make individual balls so that you end up with smaller pieces to work with. it’s easier when you first make them, to start small. I make them in different sizes and shapes now. I learned that certain fillings require a harder baked or thicker textured crust. quite often I use cornmeal on the bottom of the crust which also adds a layer of crispiness without stickiness.

For instance if I want one that will be filled with lots of wet veggies and heavy toppings, I make the dough a bit thicker and bake it a bit longer at a higher temperture – but watch it while it’s baking to be sure not to burn it. the olive oil on the crust will brown quickly if you aren’t careful. I always brush my crusts with Olive Oil as I love the taste and health benefits. I sometimes sprinkle them with dried herbs, garlic or even sesame seeds. the added dimension is up to your tastebuds and imagination.

Also I don’t bake the calzones directly On My Pizza Stone, but in a dark heavy metal pan. this keeps them from burning and also ruining my Pizza Stone. that’s something that you should know before you start making these. the tasty rewards are worth the extra effort it takes to assemble these meal pockets.

Some of my favorite combinations are Chicken, Onion, and Olive; Turkey Pepperoni, Onion and Pineapple; Tomato, Onion, Spinach, Turkey Ham and Peppers; also Basil, Tomato and fresh Mozzarella ala Margarita.

I’ve made all kinds – BBQ Chicken; Shrimp and Crab; Beef Chorizo and Salsa. And Yes you’re right, that one was quite a hit for superbowl time.

I also make one with Turkey Bacon, Tomato, Onion, and Pineapple – called the “jp” and Right Again, it’s for the Jewish Princess, Moi. you know we don’t eat pork so a girls’ gotta get her turkey onnnn,, (wink*wink) and yes I know it’s as high in calories and sometime in fat; but it satisfys my fake pork cravings.

This is the one food that I don’t get any complaints about from anyone; regardless of their age, size or taste buds. everybody loves a good Calzone. so why not whip up a platter tonite and watch your smile to frown ratio increase at dinner tonite.

Who Knows, if you like this one – maybe we’ll do Stromboli next time. Now That’s Some Gooooooooooooood Eatin Right There Mayn.

Donna Adamo, a passenger on board flight 1537, said she first noticed a couple of flies when she got to her seat on Monday but did not pay much attention to that.

As the plane was taxiing, she said she heard a passenger behind her causing a commotion and refusing to take her seat.

Ms Adamo said the pilot then announced that he had to return to the gate because of a “minor emergency on board”.

The plane was cleaned and then continued on to Charlotte.

However, the unnamed passenger who brought the spoiled meat in a carry-on bag was put on another flight, US Airways spokesman Todd Lehmacher said.

It was not immediately clear how the passenger managed to take the meat on board.

U.S. scientists design smart underpants that could save lives

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – A team of U.S. scientists has designed some new men’s briefs that may be comfortable, durable and even stylish but, unlike most underpants, may be able to save lives.

Printed on the waistband and in constant contact with the skin is an electronic biosensor, designed to measure blood pressure, heart rate and other vital signs.

The technology, developed by nano-engineering professor Joseph Wang of University of California San Diego and his team, breaks new ground in the field of intelligent textiles and is part of shift in focus in healthcare from hospital-based treatment to home-based management.

The method is similar to conventional screen-printing although the ink contains carbon electrodes.

The project is being funded by the U.S. military with American troops likely to be the first recipients.

“This specific project involves monitoring the injury of soldiers during battlefield surgery and the goal is to develop minimally invasive sensors that can locate, in the field, and identify the type of injury,” Wang told Reuters Television.

Ultimately, the biosensor that detects an injury will also be able to direct the release of drugs to relieve pain and even treat the wound.

But the technology’s range of application goes beyond the military.

“We envision all the trend of personalized medicine for remote monitoring of the elderly at home, monitoring a wide range of biomedical markers, like cardiac markers, alerting for any potential stroke, diabetic changes and other changes related to other biomedical scenario,” said Wang.

Wearable biosensors can also provide valuable information to athletes or even measure blood alcohol levels.

Robert Overweg in the Netherlands has been capturing virtual spaces since 2007 and his latest project has produced some of the most eerie and unexpected pictures from the worlds of first-person shooter video-games.

He first found the edges of a world while playing a game called Left for Dead.

“I saw normal road, walls and bushes but then the road just ended – it was foggy. So I decided to capture this and go into other games and explore their aesthetics of the ends of their worlds,” Mr Overweg said.

The History of Tire Sandals

Rubber tire sandals were used extensively by the Viet Minh and Viet Cong during the war in Vietnam from the late 1940′s until the fall of Saigon in 1979. In the face of equipment shortages the guerilla army of Vietnam turned to using old truck tires as footwear and quickly saw the advantages of the resulting sandals compared to boots. The climate of jungle-Southeast Asia is harsh.

During the war many American infantrymen suffered from “trench-foot” or fungal infections which resulted from wearing boots in the humid climate. Many looked with envy to the sandals worn by the enemy. Tragically, this footwear is also widely associated with the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. Only the upper cadre of the Khmer Rouge wore these sandals and it was a sign of political power within the regime. They were seen as a good example of self-sufficiency and were very practical.

well why not make some yourself – using this pattern from annekata.com. this is the first step in what she did and the materials she used.. we don’t want to give it away because we want you to go over there and see what she did. which is really simplistic and very chic.

- Flip flops (remember, used flip flops work great, and are more eco-friendly)
- Scissors
- Piece of chalk or marker
- Craft knife
- Heavy duty waterproof glue
- Recycled T-shirts
- Screw driver
- Flat butter knife or thin plastic ruler to stuff fabric into the soles
- Clamps (or heavy books)

See it doesn’t take rocket science to make these sandals – just a few simple tools and an easy FAQ.  Aaaannnnd, if you want to go hardcore we show you that approach too. Well Why Not, - this is after all Recycled Frockery.

This is the original Ho Chi Minh sandal – made popular in Vietnam during the time of the Vietnam war.  this is the sandal that was popularized as the “Old Ho“. it’s made the same way today in the factory in Vietnam.

This video is of an italian crafter/artist making her own version using a recycled bicycle tire. that makes it totally green.

Notice how she notches the heel and cross over slot’s. that will allow you to make them wearable with many different strap combinations. men will probably want a more neutral color, where women and kids may want to jazz it up a lil bit.

you can change out the straps and even go totally green and use the tire straps as she has done in her pair. that makes them even more durable and wearable in all weather conditions. they’re very durable since they’re made for concrete and they hold up exceptionally well when worn in all types of weather.

This tip on what type of tire to use is essential to success in making your first pair

Most importantly, always use tires that do not have steel cables running through them. All tires have some kind of fibrous reinforcement in them, typically nylon or rayon threads. Most of the newer tires also have a layer of steel cables, which is not workable at all. Still, there are a few billion of the older tires around without steel cables, so you should not have to look too far to find some. Just look on the sidewalls of the tire and it will be printed there how many plies of nylon, rayon, or steel are imbedded in the rubber.

Discover DIY projects. This may be a stretch, but I’ve found that flip-flops cut into small rounds can work nicely as protective gripper pads for your furniture legs. Or take a knife, shred them into thin strips, and use the bits to stuff cushions. You could also create a craft project for your kids: Have them use the soles to make their own custom rubber stamps.

Just last weekend I watched as the security techs came and installed a new minature spy camera inside a light casing facing the commons near my townhouse.

At first I wondered if they were watching me, but then it hit me. they’re watching everyone. ahhhhh.. now I keep my blinds on that side of the house pulled and watch carefully when I go out onto my patio. previous to this I never noticed the camera because I guess it was installed and looked much like the rest of the lighting here in our community. non descript wide angle flood lighting.

For Me, the magic happened when I saw who was installing the new one. I wonder if I can somehow tap into it and watch on the internet ? wowwww.. now that could be a real friday nite amateur double feature In Living Color.

Kinda makes me feel like Rockwell – I Always Feel Like Somebodys’ Watching Me; now I know it’s not a fantasy.

The idea behind a perforated peel is that it reduces the amount of flour that gets underneath the dough when placing it in the oven (too much flour will brown up and taste bitter), and helps keep things from sticking by reducing the amount of friction underneath the dough. I discovered the magic of the perforated pizza peel after getting to make pizza with Pizzahacker for an evening, and decided to make a DIY version for myself. These are the steps I took to make it.

Make a Perforated Pizza Peel for Improved Pizza Making – More DIY How To Projects

so as you can see, they give you the directions to make the magical peel yourself – Whoooopie ! so we’re going to be putting the peel making faq to use and then we’ll photo op ours with the pizza in an upcoming post.

one of the top things that makes fresh pizza better is the crust. yes I’m a crust lover.  I like a good chewy well baked flavorful crust.  hopefully rubbed with fresh garlic and olive oil before baking on a dusting of semolina sitting bare bottomed on a hot pizza stone.

Now be honest, doesn’t that sound soooo naughty ?

Yes mine is exactly like this – on the bottom rack of my oven, permanently; since I also use it to bake bread regularly. the key to getting the crust just right has to do with the temperature of the oven and the pizza stone.  I know most people bake their pizza in a pan, which I do for deep dish Chicago style – but I prefer the Sicilian style.  flat with a brick oven taste.  that means heat up the oven and the pizza stone.

Heating up the oven means really that – as high as you can get it - which is usually about 550 fahrenheit on most us ovens.  turn it up and let it heat until that stone is sizzling.  you need to let the stone fully heat through and that may take upwards of 30 to 45 minutes.  this is a good time to let your dough rise, and chop your toppings.

another key to my favorite pizza is the freshly chopped toppings. yes I hand chop everything vegetable right before I put it on the pizza.  well almost everything.  I buy my turkey bacon and  pepperoni pre sliced; and I also use turkey ham which I get sliced at the store usually.  I sometimes cook a whole chicken breast and then thinly slice it to top my pizza.  it all depends on what we want that day.  we don’t eat pork so all our toppings are either chicken, turkey or veggie.  always lots of veggies.

okay the sauce, the sauce the sauce. yes I cheat on the sauce.  I use Trader Joe’s marinara.  uh huhhh.. I just add some additional olive oil to the crust before I brush the crust with the sauce. yes I said brush. I don’t overload the crust with sauce so that the crust stays crispy.  that’s a tip I learned from my friends in Italy. let the crust bear the weight without pressure. I always have extra sauce sitting on the stove beside the pizza for anyone who wants it. usually the sauce gets used on the pasta accompaniment. yessss I said pasta accompaniment

I also use fresh mozzarella. the kind that comes in a ball and you can spread out in thin slices.  it’s much better tasting than that square stuff or heaven forbid the pre shredded stuff.  yes I said stuff.. (sideeye) if nothing else, take the time to hand cut your cheese freshly and you’ll immediately notice the difference in the taste.

I top my pizza off with fresh basil leaves, and a sprinkling of dry Italian seasoning.  I know why not totally fresh ? well the dried has a different texture and a simple sprinkle enhances the flavor already there from the marinara sauce. it’s just a dry topping more or less and it’s easier.

In my kitchen, the crust is rolled out on semolina flour to eliminate the stickiness of the gluten in the unbleached flour.  it also adds an additional layer of flavor and sugar to the crust.  to me the crust is the most important element of any pizza.  I use a simple crust recipe, regardless of how I mix it – it’s the ingredients that matter most to me.

This is from 101 cookbooks - which lists the overnight pizza dough from Peter Rinehart. this is the best pizza dough ever. trust me, I love this recipe when I can make it and put it in the freezer to use later. the freezing helps the texture and when you thaw it and allow it to rise the texture is divine.  this is my favorite pizza dough for Calzones to keep them thin and crunchy.

Peter Reinhart’s Napoletana Pizza Dough Recipe

Heidi notes: Peter’s recipe says the olive (or vegetable oil) is optional. I use it every time – always olive oil, not vegetable oil. I love the moisture and suppleness it adds to the dough, and it makes your hands soft too.

4 1/2 cups (20.25 ounces) unbleached high-gluten, bread, or all-purpose flour, chilled
1 3/4 (.44 ounce) teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon (.11 ounce) instant yeast
1/4 cup (2 ounces) olive oil (optional)
1 3/4 cups (14 ounces) water, ice cold (40°F)
Semolina flour OR cornmeal for dusting

1. Stir together the flour, salt, and instant yeast in a 4-quart bowl (or in the bowl of an electric mixer). With a large metal spoon, stir in the oil and the cold water until the flour is all absorbed (or mix on low speed with the paddle attachment), If you are mixing by hand, repeatedly dip one of your hands or the metal spoon into cold water and use it, much like a dough hook, to work the dough vigorously into a smooth mass while rotating the bowl in a circular motion with the other hand. Reverse the circular motion a few times to develop the gluten further. Do this for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and the ingredients are evenly distributed. If you are using an electric mixer, switch to the dough hook and mix on medium speed for 5 to 7 minutes, or as long as it takes to create a smooth, sticky dough. The dough should clear the sides of the bowl but stick to the bottom of the bowl. If the dough is too wet and doesn’t come off the sides of the bowl, sprinkle in some more flour just until it clears the sides. If it clears the bottom of the bowl, dribble in a tea- spoon or two of cold water. The finished dough will be springy, elastic, and sticky, not just tacky, and register 50 to 55F.

2. Sprinkle flour on the counter and transfer the dough to the counter. Prepare a sheet pan by lining it with baking parchment and misting the parchment with spray oil (or lightly oil the parchment). Using a metal dough scraper, cut the dough into 6 equal pieces (or larger if you are comfortable shaping large pizzas), You can dip the scraper into the water between cuts to keep the dough from sticking to it, Sprinkle flour over the dough. Make sure your hands are dry and then flour them. Lift each piece and gently round it into a ball. If the dough sticks to your hands, dip your hands into the flour again. Transfer the dough balls to the sheet pan, Mist the dough generously with spray oil and slip the pan into a food-grade plastic bag.

3. Put the pan into the refrigerator overnight to rest the dough, or keep for up to 3 days. (Note: If you want to save some of the dough for future baking, you can store the dough balls in a zippered freezer bag. Dip each dough ball into a bowl that has a few tablespoons of oil in it, rolling the dough in the oil, and then put each ball into a separate bag. You can place the bags into the freezer for up to 3 months. Transfer them to the refrigerator the day before you plan to make pizza.)

4. On the day you plan to make the pizza, remove the desired number of dough balls from the refrigerator 2 hours before making the pizza. Before letting the dough rest at room temperature for 2 hours, dust the counter with flour, and then mist the counter with spray oil. Place the dough balls on top of the floured counter and sprinkle them with flour; dust your hands with flour. Gently press the dough into flat disks about 1/2 inch thick and 5 inches in diameter. Sprinkle the dough with flour, mist it again with spray oil, and cover the dough loosely with plastic wrap or a food-grade plastic bag. Now let rest for 2 hours.

5. At least 45 minutes before making the pizza, place a baking stone either on the floor of the oven (for gas ovens), or on a rack in the lower third of the oven. Heat the oven as hot as possible, up to 800F (most home ovens will go only to 500 to 550F, but some will go higher). If you do not have a baking stone, you can use the back of a sheet pan, but do not preheat the pan.

6. Generously dust a peel or the back of a sheet pan with semolina flour or cornmeal. Make the pizzas one at a time. Dip your hands, including the backs of your hands and knuckles, in flour and lift I piece of dough by getting under it with a pastry scraper. Very gently lay the dough across your fists and carefully stretch it by bouncing the dough in a circular motion on your hands, carefully giving it a little stretch with each bounce. If it begins to stick to your hands, lay it down on the floured counter and reflour your hands, then continue shaping it. Once the dough has expanded outward, move to a full toss as shown on page 208. If you have trouble tossing the dough, or if the dough keeps springing back, let it rest for 5 to 20 minutes so the gluten can relax, and try again. You can also resort to using a rolling pin, though this isn’t as effective as the toss method.

7. When the dough is stretched out to your satisfaction (about 9 to 12 inches in diameter for a 6-ounce piece of dough), lay it on the peel or pan, making sure there is enough semolina flour or cornmeal to allow it to slide. Lightly top it with sauce and then with your other top- pings, remembering that the best pizzas are topped with a less-is-more philosophy. The American “kitchen sink” approach is counterproductive, as it makes the crust more difficult to bake. A few, usually no more than 3 or 4 toppings, including sauce and cheese is sufficient.

8. Slide the topped pizza onto the stone (or bake directly on the sheet pan) and close the door. Wait 2 minutes, then take a peek. If it needs to be rotated 180 degrees for even baking, do so. The pizza should take about 5 to 8 minutes to bake. If the top gets done before the bottom, you will need to move the stone to a lower self before the next round. if the bottom crisps before the cheese caramelizes, then you will need to raise the stone for subsequent bakes.

9. Remove the pizza from the oven and transfer to a cutting board. Wait 3 to 5 minutes before slicing and serving, to allow the cheese to set slightly.

Makes six 6-ounce pizza crusts.

Old televisions and computers containing hazardous substances are still being exported from Europe despite a ban aimed at stopping the trade, which poisons workers at makeshift recycling plants in Africa and Asia.

“We have an extraordinary amount of illegal shipment along the coast in Europe”, says Karl-Heinz Florenz, a German member of the European Parliament who is working to update EU law.

Traffickers trick the authorities by not labelling goods as electronics, by pretending they are for re-use, or by hiding them in the middle of a container.

The containers that get through are shipped to West Africa – most commonly Ghana and Nigeria – and to South Asian countries including India and Pakistan.

“The fundamental problem with electronics is that it’s designed in a very bad way,” says Kim Schoppink, a campaigner at the Dutch branch of Greenpeace who travelled to Ghana to look at the issue in 2008.

“That makes it very expensive to recycle in Europe and therefore it’s dumped in developing countries.”

(CNN) — Biologists suspect that unusually cold waters off the coast of Brazil were responsible for the deaths of more than 550 penguins that washed up on shore in the past 10 days.

Since July 11, about 556 dead penguins have appeared on beaches, Thiago do Nascimento, a biologist at the Peruibe Aquarium, told CNN.

At the beach of Praia Grande alone, on the Sao Paulo coast, more than 170 penguins have washed up on shore since Friday, according to the local government.

It is not unusual for penguins to show up on the Brazilian coast during their migration, but most of the time, they are alive, said another biologist, Isabelle Nunes.

Necropsies performed on many of the penguins show that they had no food in their stomachs and probably starved to death, Nascimento said, adding that cold weather probably contributed to their deaths.

Nunes said it is possible that the cold waters, brought on by a regional cold front, made the fish that the penguins eat seek other waters.

More tests are being conducted, Nunes said.

Farther north, on the famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro, penguin appearances and rescues have become common in recent years.

It’s normal for Magellan penguins to leave their colonies in the Antarctic in an annual migration in search of fish, following the plankton-rich, frigid water currents traveling north along the coast of South America. What has changed is that they are increasingly unable to return home because they get sick, weak or disoriented for reasons that have yet to be determined.

Climate change, overfishing and pollution of the water all could contribute to the penguins becoming lost.

The Niteroi Zoo, near Rio de Janeiro, first began receiving penguins for rescue in 1999. Since then, they have received an increasing number of the birds, peaking with 1,000 penguins in 2008.

Do You Use WD 40 to help around the house ?

With all the talk we’ve done lately about the Oil in the Gulf – it got us thinking about what Oil Based Products We Like – and of course WE Love WD-40. sorry folks, we know it’s not the most eco friendly stuff; but hey, it’s a heck of a product.

We’ve discovered so many uses for it that we wondered if you used it too ? So lets talk WD-40 and see what we can all share today.

WE Love WD-40; for allllll kinds of stuff. we’ve heard folks talking about it’s magical properties for years, so we gave it a try. of course we were hooked. Finally now  they have it in a natural pump spray form; and out of that can with propellant.  There is even a small pump spray for purses and desks.

From the first jokes about rubbing it on your arthritic joints, to your fishing pole;  it’s always a good conversation starter anywhere you go. just try it out.

Ask the next person who’s in line with you about what they do with WD-40, and get ready for some news. yes we all have our little secrets.

Mine is spraying it on the screen of the computer in the library, after I wrote on it with lipstick one nite after a hissyfit (side-eye) in our office. I cleaned it up, and then I white vinegar sprayed to remove any smell of the WD-40. no one was the wiser.  I still know, but no one else does, still.

Lets try these uses out and You let us know if you happen to have some we should know about in the comments please.

1. Make coffee and tea stains disappear. You might think it strange to use WD-40 in the kitchen, but a little squirt can remove stubborn coffee and tea stains from your countertops. All you have to do is spray it on the stain and wipe it off with a dampened sponge or cloth.

2. Restore your refrigerator to its former glory. While cleaning your kitchen, take a look inside the refrigerator and try not to cringe at all the caked-on food bits. After emptying the contents, spray a little bit of WD-40 on dirty areas and wipe away. Just be sure to give the refrigerator interior a complete wipe-down before putting the food back.

This stuff is Magical around water as well,

3. you can protect your outdoor light bulbs by spraying before you install them in the fixtures. this is one way to make easy work of a household chore.  this also helps to prevent corrosion in the sockets and the fixtures themselves, if sprayed with WD-40.

4. Transform your toilet bowls. After months or years of use, toilet bowls can acquire some pretty tough stains no matter how often you clean them. Fortunately, spraying WD-40 into the bowl and allowing it to sit for a minute or so can dissolve toilet bowl dirt. Just brush and flush. – it also cleans hard water stains off your shower doors and walls. just spray, wipe and presto !

5. Store a can in your laundry room for those rotten tomatoes. A big, juicy sliced tomato is great for burgers, but not so great for your shirt. You may be tempted to trash it after soiling it with tomato stains, but if you spray some WD-40 onto the stain and wash as usual after a few minutes, it should be good as new. This also works for BBQ Sauce and Catsup stains.   carry a mini can when you travel to treat when you stain. then when you return home, launder your pre treated items.

6. Hold off on calling your carpet cleaner. In between shampoos, you can clean stains from your carpeting on your own. If you use WD-40 in conjunction with a carpet spray cleaner, the stain should become nothing but a bad memory. Spray it on before you use your regular carpet cleaner and repeat the process until the stain is no more.

7. Keep your leather furniture looking and feeling great. Don’t be nervous; you can use WD-40 to condition your leather furniture by spraying and buffing. The solution works wonders for cleaning and protecting your leather investment.

8. Wipe away all traces of your kids’ unwanted artwork. Not the kind that is done on paper, but the kind that is done in marker or crayon on your walls, furniture and appliances. Spray WD-40 directly onto the marks and wipe the mess away. You may want to spot test an area that’s on wallpaper or your upholstery, but it’s generally safe to use on these surfaces.

9. Help get that old sticker off your vehicle, or other item with just a shot of WD-40.  spray and then easily peel, leaving no damage or residue on your paint. this is actually the safest way to remove any adhesive residue.

10. WD-40 is great to help remove adhesive residue.  Regifters, it’s wonderful to remove any traces of price tags, stickers or even adhesive badges from clothing, household items and even carpeting.

One Caution – Don’t use it on Silk and be sure to launder any clothing you used it on – before you wear it, since the smell is quite strong.

11. For grease stains in clothing, carpeting or cement, you should try to clean as much of the affected area with a cloth or scraping tool first. Spray the stain with a liberal amount of WD-40, and let it sit for short time, then begin wiping the area with a cloth, preferably one that you don’t mind getting grease on. Repeat this process until the stain is gone, then wash the stained object with soap and water.  and yes ladies, it removes makeup from clothes too.  just a spray before you launder and it’s pre treated to remove any oil based make up – like lipsticks, or even mascara.

CAUTION - If you’re removing grease based; or oil based make up stains from clothing, don’t put them in the dryer until you’re sure that the grease has been fully removed.  This goes Double for Waxy Crayon Marks or Grease Pencil Marks.  Drying the item before the stain is removed, will set the stain in forever.

12. Remove Dirt, Grime, Grease and Crayon Marks from Metal, Your Television Screen, Plastics, and Yard Furniture safely with just a spray and a wipe.  it’s a miracle worker at restoring kids toys and furniture.  be sure to wash non electronic items with Soap and Water thoroughly after using WD-40 to remove the stains and oil residue left from WD-40.

13. This is the meanest stuff we’ve ever seen on Yellow Jacket and Wasps Nests – It’s that time of year, and if you have to do it – do it quickly and effectively. this stuff is so fast the pests never know what hit em.

It may be cruel but it’s safer than traps, and long lasting poisons.

14. Got a Flat – Whip out your WD-40 and Fix it, Literally

15. and we have one final use for it – Self Protection, or in this case Hand Held Torch.  Take Note Juggalos, this stuff lasts longer than Aquanet and burns bluer.  it’s not as cheap but it does the job; and cleans up afterward. (wink*wink)

We’ve been together through thick and thin. from the beginning he knew that I was a struggler, and didn’t like those who didn’t struggle to get what they want. I believe that Dreams are possibilities that you can Manifest if you so desire. Hard work and Perseverance, Patience and Gratefulness are the best tools for a life filled with gifts; from a higher plane.

We met when I was leaving town to start over in Atlanta in 83′. I moved on to Florida, but still when I came to town, I checked for him. He told me the other day, that was what made him realize how serious of a woman I am. Then when I returned to complete my MS at MSU in Lansing, I came back to see him, and he was happy to see me.

I’d drive down from Lansing about once a month to visit my family and see him; until I graduated. the day I did I was so out of Lansing. I asked him if he would help me move back to the D and that was it. we’ve been together ever since.

Over the years, which are now decades; we’ve had alot of cars, and been alot of places; always together. I’m glad that Patience was the key that made this all possible; because it also gave me another wonderful gift – A Livitity of Productiveness and Pride. Something that I’m sure my Ancestors expected, and can now see. That’s what it’s all about when you reach my age. Uhhhh Ruhh (side-eye), and no I’m not gonna say what that magic number is because it makes absolutely no difference.

From volunteer opportunities to donation links, please share anything you are aware of that will allow people to get involved and minimize the effects of this disaster.

The Gulf is an example of the damage we are doing to our environment. The oceans are a critical part of our food chain. Destruction to them, means destruction to humanity. Finger pointing does little good. Though it is time for us to step up and say, “Enough is Enough.”

Let’s put some teeth into all this talk about fossil fuel alternatives. The supply of crude oil is limited. Governments have the power to save this planet, though it will not be done if we continue down the path we currently are on.

Blog about alternatives. Add an Action Badge. Sign the Petition. Get Your Readers Involved. Tell the Government to do what they did when we wen’t to the moon. Say “we will become fossil fuel independent by 2020.” Tough challenges, calls for tough leadership and tough people. We will either pay the price now, or our children will pay it later.

The sea life in the Gulf have no voice and are already paying for our gross negligence. It’s time for Real Change. “Enough is Enough.” Environmental agencies are pandering to D.C. because they feel Obama is their best option.

Well, nothing great ever came out of Washington DC. Everything great started with a small group of people. Do not wait until it’s too late. The fate of this planet and what we hand to our kids is in our hands.

Often we run across points of view from economists and ecologists which actually support our core beliefs. this is one of them.  Tom and Dr King are a Pair of Smart Talking Heads. we paired them up because they are talking about the same thing – De-fossilizing our Planet ASAP People !

Dr King is a fellow from the Smith School in London.  He is a world recognized expert on ecological disasters and the impact they have on economies. it’s really interesting to see this coming out of the UK; in such close proximity to the G20 Conference.  This is just a short clipping of the entire piece, which is well worth a read. Sir David King has called on governments to “de-fossilise” their economies

Future oil extraction could create new environmental, social and technological challenges, says the UK’s former chief scientist.

Sir David King said that, as global oil demand started to outstrip supply, oil companies would be forced to drill in unconventional places.

He cited the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as an example of the risks associated with the oil production.

Sir David was speaking at a press conference in London.

His comments come days before the World Forum on Enterprise and the Environment, organised by the Smith School of the University of Oxford. This event is meant to draw governments’ attention to the global addiction to fossil fuels.

Sir David is the director of the Smith School.

Just seeing Flat Tony on his Yacht sailing with his child this weekend in light of his recent performance in congress, and the press – we need to step away from him and BP for a lil while to regain our composure. The children of the gulf may never sail with their dads on fathers day ever again. How much more disrespect can one man show ?

Who Cares – We Have a Problem to Solve and He is the smallest part of it..

We’re Smart -  So Lets start to examine ways to help think-tank solutions to help our fellow citizens in the gulf states. Lets come up with ideas to help them to make lemonade from this huge bp lemon. surely if BP is trying to offer them pennies on a dollar, we can offer them some thoughts to turn their losses into wins.

Lets Think Green and get the Gulf Coast Back In The Black,

PLEASE HELP US TO “Think Green” and Suggest Ideas for Helping Turn the Gulf Coast into a Green Zone; both Economically and Environmentally.

My First Idea is to start a tourism program much like they had after Hurricane Katrina to bring in volunteers to help with the clean up. Let them stay in local b&b’s and eat at local cafes’. Let our hands help to fix with our brains what our neighbors need fixed. It’s Called Eco Voluntourism and it’s popular all over the world. it’s made for this.

This is what they need in the gulf coast – Low Carbon Housing and Rebuilding / Rehabilitation Projects. Tom Rand is a very smart guy and he never wastes money or time. He has all of the work outlined and clarified. this is what the gulf needs. Carbon Neutral Businesses which Cost Less to produce, run and maintain – over the long run.

The President seems to be leaning toward defossilizing – Lets Go With It, cause it’s seriously something that we need to do, now.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles continues to insist that no massive underwater oil plumes in “large concentrations” have been detected from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Suttles’ comments came Wednesday morning on network news shows, a day after the government said water tests confirmed underwater oil plumes from the oil spill, but that concentrations are “very low.”

Suttles told NBC’s “Today” show that it “may be down to how you define what a plume is here.”

NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco said Tuesday that the tests conducted at three sites by a University of South Florida research vessel confirmed oil as far as 3,300 feet below the surface 42 miles northeast of the well site.

Meredith Vieira was hardhitting with her questions to Doug Suttles, probing him around the fact that BP still doesn’t know how much oil is leaking, and asking if the company is playing games on the advice of its legal team.

I’m a Gulf Coast Floridian presently working in Michigan; and I want you to know that regardless of what you think about egg on faces, I’ve got some peculiar feelings.

The symptoms have included throat irritation, coughs, chest pains, intense stress headaches, the inability to sleep or concentrate without being redirected unconsciously to the Gulf Oil Disaster; and anxiety like panic strickening shortness of breath.

Amazingly I’ve also had an unexplained urge to fly to nola and get frisky with Tony Hayward. So Doug, Can You Make My Symptoms Magically Go Away with your claims of Egg ?  and fyi – I’m totally allergic to eggs so you won’t find any in my kitchen friend.

I know you are like most people Now Doug and you don’t like going to the Doctor. We want to reassure you and make this as painless for you as possible.  you may take this as a personal attack, but rest assured it is not. you are just the closest we’ve come to someone from BP who seems willing to talk at all about what’s really going on. plus you are such a smart guy, that we kinda want to hope that you will put some actuality into this picture.

We’re not here to attack you but to ask you, why does BP want to confuse the facts, and the people of America ?

That’s a relatively simple question. probably much simpler than the one Meredith Vierra asked you and you still can’t, won’t, haven’t (select your choice Doug) Answered yet.

We don’t want to lump you in with Sarah Palin and her convo about the spill but you’ve got to talk more sensibly to us, especially now that we can see more than a million barrels a day have been escaping for 50+ days.

If we were to just assume that you can speak for BP that wouldn’t be fair to You or BP.   So we’re hoping that you will respond to us as you responded to Barbara – in the comments.

We promise to keep it civil and to really listen to what you want us to know.

We don’t expect BP to walk away and we don’t expect BP to stand down on their word. We’d just like to get a little clearer on what exactly you think is fair in how to handle the clean up;  inlight of the present 2 months of disaster we are all observing come to a head today. We’re Not as cute as Anderson Cooper and we certainly don’t have as many viewers, but we still think we’re important in the larger sense – especially if you want to dispell the feeling that - BP Lies, and The Gulf Dies..

Oh and about that Truth thing, that Really Is Our Name – AUSET, It Translates to Truth, Literally.

The spill is believed to be America’s worst environmental disasterAs many as 40,000 barrels (1.7 million gallons) of oil a day may have been gushing out from a blown-out Gulf of Mexico well, doubling many estimates.

The US Geological Survey says that flow rate could have been reached before a cap was put on the well on 3 June.

Oil has been leaking into the Gulf since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on 20 April and sank off the coast of the US state of Louisiana, killing 11 workers.

BP said the device placed on the well collected 15,800 barrels of oil on Wednesday – slightly up on the 15,010 barrels collected in the previous 24-hour period.

New estimates for the oil spill prior to 3 June follow an assessment by a team of scientists put together by the US government and coordinated by the US Geological Survey.

“The lowest estimate that we’re seeing that the scientists think is credible is probably about 20,000 barrels, and the highest that we’re seeing is probably a little over 40,000,” said Marcia McNutt, director of the US Geological Survey.

The new estimates are staggering and only add to BP’s woes, the BBC’s Andy Gallacher in Florida says.

The British oil giant has estimated that up to 19,000 barrels a day was leaking from the ruptured well before they managed to partially contain the spill.

Last month, BP was estimating the leak to be the equivalent of just over 5,000 barrels per day.

“This is a nightmare that keeps getting worse every week,” said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, America’s oldest environmental organisation.

“We’re finding out more and more information about the extent of the damage… Clearly we can’t trust BP’s estimates of how much oil is coming out.”

‘Lack of integrity’

Relations between BP and the White House are now more strained than ever, our correspondent reports.

Reuters reports that Actor and environmentalist Robert Redford has weighed in on the U.S. oil spill crisis, condemning efforts by major energy companies to promote their environmental credentials and use their money to influence “their parrots in Congress.”

In a five-minute YouTube video, produced by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Redford says the worst oil spill in U.S. history should serve as a lesson for Americans to move away from their dependence on oil and pursue alternative energy like wind and solar power.

“I think it is time for the American people to take charge of their own livelihood and say, let’s stop this and let’s move to a clean energy policy,” the “Out of Africa” star says in the video “The Fix” released on Thursday.

Redford, 73, who is also an NRDC trustee, said “green” advertising campaigns by BP, and Chevron’s “Human Energy” slogan made him “want to throw up”.

In a video featuring photos and TV footage of the six week long oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, the Oscar-winning director accused big oil companies of being in collusion with U.S. politicians.

He urged Americans to “stop listening to the self-interested propaganda of the oil companies and their parrots in Congress”.

We also found out this week that BP had purchased the tag OILSPILL from Google. Yeah Bloody Right…. wonder why ? notice the bloody oil spill  crossing the boom around the peninsula; which is at one of the  Passes closed this weekend in Mississippi – due to the Oil.

That sounds sooooo fishy; especially coming from BP.  Everything they’ve said up to this point has proven to be  shady.  so why should this lil deal be any different ?   They’re hopefully going to use this tag to help repair life in the Gulf States and the Gulf itself.  That’s why we’re showing you the oil crossing the boom.  Sadly, We fully expect it to play out exactly that way with BP.  As we can all see, they are slippery.

It appears that the pressure on Congress has pointed them to start the move toward demanding an escrow account  be established by BP. Specifically for the money owed to fishermen, and others directly damaged by the oil spill.  Hopefully it’s going into action soon. Trust us the people who’s livelyhoods were destroyed needed it 50 days ago Tony.

Reuters Reports that BP has bought terms such as “oil spill” from search engine providers including Google Inc to help direct Internet users to its website as it attempts to control the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

A spokesman said BP would pay fees so its own website would rank higher or even top in the list of results when Internet users search on terms such as “oil spill,” “volunteer” and “claims.”

BP did not say how much it was paying for the service but President Barack Obama has criticised the company for spending $50 million on TV advertising to bolster its image during the crisis.

BP said it wanted to help people who were trying to access information on the BP website to find it more readily, rather than intending to draw away hits from other sites.

“We know people are looking for those terms on our website and we’re just trying to make it easier for them to get directly to those terms,” the spokesman told Reuters.

That sounds like another Parody, so we found this little parody to match it up. This is another joke about BP and the spill from some professional comics.  It’s Gone Viral and is burning up the internets – It’s called “The Coffee Spill”. It’s to me the closest demonstration of what’s happened down there since the spill, sadly.

Bloggers are researching the oil spill all over the world, and posting about it daily – as we have;  and  that is truly amazing.  people who are reaching out to find a solution and to find a way to let others know about it.  that’s what this is all about.  Finding a Way to Fix this Crisis – Quickly and Permanently.
