All in all 2010 has been a marvelous year so far. filled with good tidings, constant renewals and challenges that rewarded us. Gifts of goodness are the kind that we most cherish; like good health, good spirit, and good life. the chance to see a little more of the wonder of this lifetime. That is truly a Gift, The Present of Today that we receive Each Day We Are Here on this Planet.

We’ve received a wonderful Gift – so wonderful that we had to take it out and play with it today. We’ll be shooting a video of the entire event to let you see just how we roll, literally. Gifts are always what everybody wants on their birthday and usually we expect some tokens of appreciation from those we love, but I got the Ultimate Driving Machine; from My BadBwoy.

We’ve been together through thick and thin. from the beginning he knew that I was a struggler, and didn’t like those who didn’t struggle to get what they want. I believe that Dreams are possibilities that you can Manifest if you so desire. Hard work and Perseverance, Patience and Gratefulness are the best tools for a life filled with gifts; from a higher plane.

We met when I was leaving town to start over in Atlanta in 83′. I moved on to Florida, but still when I came to town, I checked for him. He told me the other day, that was what made him realize how serious of a woman I am. Then when I returned to complete my MS at MSU in Lansing, I came back to see him, and he was happy to see me.

I’d drive down from Lansing about once a month to visit my family and see him; until I graduated. the day I did I was so out of Lansing. I asked him if he would help me move back to the D and that was it. we’ve been together ever since.

Over the years, which are now decades; we’ve had alot of cars, and been alot of places; always together. I’m glad that Patience was the key that made this all possible; because it also gave me another wonderful gift – A Livitity of Productiveness and Pride. Something that I’m sure my Ancestors expected, and can now see. That’s what it’s all about when you reach my age. Uhhhh Ruhh (side-eye), and no I’m not gonna say what that magic number is because it makes absolutely no difference.

Thats Right, BadGalsRadio’s rollin out on the road in the new staff car; heading south. We plan to be on the road more this fall. You can expect to hear about us doing live events in Atlanta during the fall – at the Cumberland Mall.

IT’S Earthday.. One of Our Favorite Holidays

Wayyyyyy back in the mid 70′s As a senior at U of M at the School of Natural Resources in Ecology Studies; we helped bring the concept to life for our campus. there is never a time when Earth should be second to man. man originates from the genetic material of Earth. many wonder how man originated, but that’s secondary to how earth sustains us. Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen that’s what it’s all about.. GAS.

Earthday is April 22nd and each of us owes our salt to Mother Earth

So Today lets take a moment and think about how much this planet gives to our existence. heck it is our existence..

Many of you won’t remember this, but the Cuyahoga River Actually Burned.

In fact it happened several times, damaging the bridge and preventing use.  It was a dangerous totally polluted mess. it took many many many people, many many years; to restore it to a some what clean stream. There is no way anyone should have ever let that happen. Yet this type of brownstream pollution is still continuing on our planet today. Ask Yourself Why – then look at the amount of trash we generate and where it’s disposed of mainly.

Burning is dumping; dumping into our waterways, soil and in-fact our food chain. Until we get the toxic waste buildup disposal problem under control, we will have a very big problem.  This waste is now showing up in our pockets in the form of taxes to fix the mess.

Friends, How long can this be the norm ?  Really, it’s got to stop

Cleveland is one of the parts of the Cuyahoga that I’ve seen;  and in the flats where the river flows through downtown it’s clean. It generates money by offering venues waterside access. there are parks, and lots of new housing from converted abandoned warehouse stock; which had previously sat vacant for decades – due to the brownfield and brownstream issues. Cleaning up the river returns money to the areas that it flows through. This has been proven time and again.

Water is our most precious resource.  Yet we waste it and trash it as though it’s boundless. Well guess what people, water on this planet is in such short supply that some predict it will run out before oil. Watch This Wake Up Call.

Last fall we wrote about the problems with Water in connection with Poverty. This time we’re writing about how water itself is the scarcest commodity that we cannot live without.

We seem to take it for granted that water will always be here, in abundance and available for our drinking needs.  That’s just not the case.  Take a look at the problems we have with water pollution.  Also take a look at the problems we have with water evaporation.  Water management is one of the largest businesses on the planet today.  Most of us know little to nothing about it.  Yet it’s a billion dollar business – that we own.

Municipal water systems in the United States are owned by the local municipalities. Unlike in Europe, where all water is owned by the country.  Water is seen as a managable resource, much as we see timber – in most of the world. Yet in the United States it’s wasted and allowed to be ruined – by the very people who we pay to manage our greatest resource.

World Water Day: Why business needs to worry

Global water requirements … will be 40% greater than what can currently be sustainably supplied

Monday is World Water Day, but I suspect relatively few will have noticed.

While the world is rightly moving to address the challenges presented by climate change and depleting supplies of fossil fuels, the same awareness and consensus does not exist when it comes to addressing our usage of water. Yet the harsh fact is that we will probably run out of water long before we run out of fuel.

We need to act fast, now.

Most people equate water consumption with what they use in their homes and places of work, but the challenge facing the globe goes much, much further than that. The 2030 Water Resources Group, a collaboration between the private and social sectors to discover solutions to combat water scarcity, estimates that global water requirements will grow by over 50% over the next 20 years. Such levels of usage will be 40% greater than what can currently be sustainably supplied.

That Should give us all a little something to think about

Currently, a billion people in the world lack access to clean, safe drinking water (Charity: Water). That’s one in eight of us. It could be three kids in your child’s class of 24, it could be one person in your family of mom, dad, four grandparents, and two kids. It could be anyone. The facts are these: Eighty percent of disease is caused by unsafe water (Charity: Water). Unsafe water kills more people per year than AIDS and cancer combined (Hydraid).

That people lack access to clean water is hard to believe in the developed world, and though unsafe water might not be sensationalist enough for the media, it kills 5,000 more children everyday (Hydraid). While parents fret about children riding their bikes too fast, they forget that in the time it takes to rub your eyes after a long day at work, the time it takes to scan a crowded bulletin board at the local coffee shop, the time it takes to walk up your driveway: 15 seconds, a child dies somewhere in the world due to unsafe water.

How can you make a difference?

All it takes is an investment. Not charity, investment. Invest $20 in Charity: Water and 100% of that investment will reap dividends: partially funding the building of a well so one person in the developing world will have access to clean, safe drinking water for 20 years. Invest $32 in Hydraid and that investment will reap dividends: buying one biosand filter that requires no electricity and minimal setup, to give up to 10 people access to clean, safe water for 10 or more years.

Last year, 6000 high school student activists and I raised $160,000 for the Hydraid Foundation. We are 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 year olds. We may not be old enough to do many things, but nobody is too young to make a difference.

this is our time to step it up and make it the year we all know it can be.  with the advent of the internet, many things became easier and greener.

Today we want you to consider taking one month out of 2010 and Not Spending Any Money… Uh Huh

We’d like to think that the majority of our visitors are Green; however we know that most of us live in a technological world where it’s easier to spend money to do things; than to take a few extra steps and do them yourself – for yourself.

in our sidebar we put the World Catalog.org search app to help you locate books at almost any library anywhere – to encourage you to Read , Watch and Listen Green. it’s as easy as looking that Media or Book up and getting it from a library instead of buying it. and if you’ve already got it – why not lend it to someone who may want to read it, watch it or listen to it. then ask them to pass it onto another person who would like to check it out.

Several years we joined bookcrossing.org and  since then, we’ve given away hundreds of books, and magazines. most left in the open or “wild” as we bookcrossers say. they are always appreciated by those who find them. That’s Truly Green. we’ve left books at all kinds of places.  restaurants, hotels, spas, beauty shops, airports, left on airplanes, beauty shops, barber shops,  hospitals, stores, laundromats, bars, breweries,  even coffehouses.

most people love free stuff, and if you give – you will receive. it’s a green law of karma..

This year lets start it out right, and recycle our resources first as an example to others of how easy and fun it can be.

Try one of these free things the next time you are looking for fun:

1. Go on a nice neighborhood walk. You can check out old houses, and  get acquainted with history, architecture and neighborhoods you’ve never visited. all the while you are doing it, take photos so that you remember the fun.

2. Go to a Public Library and browse the collections of sections you don’t normally visit; like the Map Room, or the Films Section. you will enjoy discoveries that were right there waiting for you all along. the DPL hosts lots of free activities for all age levels as well they have a program to get you into local museums and attractions for FREE – Yes The Museum Adventure Pass is Wonderful.

3. Volunteer as a docent or usher at an attraction, theater or concert hall. this gets you in to see the show, and usually after the first act you are allowed to sit in the back to chill until others need to be seated.  the hidden benefit to this is that you also get all areas access and like Me may meet some VIPs and Stars.

this is how I was able to meet Nelson Mandela; and Aretha Franklin; on the same day at the same place.  talk about a bonus !

4. Go on a Winery or Microbrewery tour, ahhhhh the goods are at the end and yes they are usually free. we did this on our honeymoon and it was wonderful. I drank wine all the way back from Niagara Falls to Windsor Ontario – and it was all FREE. wow.  I even received a free bottle of Ice Wine from one of the wineries as a wedding present to share with hubby when we were home and he wasn’t driving.  Remember Never Drink and Drive.

5. Take a Factory Tour - the Ford Rouge Factory Tour in Dearborn MI.  is one example of the best way to see what’s happening in cars and believe it or not Green Factory Redesign. you get a lil car sticker and goodies at the end, including a delicious Detroit Made Kowalski Hot Dog and a Detroit Faygo soda.

we’ve done lots of factory tours and trust me, all the kids we see just love it.  we also did the Bettermade Potato Chip Factory Tour - the smell of those hot crispy freshly fried chips were heavenly; and yes you get some free at the end.  there is a store on-site which sells them as well.  Loves It !

6. Visit a park and have a picnic lunch. plan a day of exploration in an area of your state or country that is interesting to you; and make it a day. a nice lunch pre packed, and good walking shoes are all you’ll really need. we suggest you take a few extra goodies to feed to the local wildlife if you’d like Live Green Entertainment.

we carry old bread, crackers and popcorn to feed the birds and squirrels. they are so much fun to watch as they race to get the flying bread. kids also learn alot about how to interact with nature from our visits to parks. we know that the butterfly and bee populations are declining; but this is the best way to see them in their own habitat. what could be greener than that !

7. Volunteer at a zoo or animal shelter. the joy of spending time close up with animals is so wonderful. we used to work at the nature center, where we assisted with live animal demonstrations and care. we were also trained to take the visitors on nature walks around the preserve. the flora and fauna have a way of soothing the most industrialized brain.

8. Check out Local Sculpture Gardens and Urban Art Exhibits. they are everywhere now. some of my friends and I went on a photo safari of our neighborhood. it was fabulous. we each brought our cameras and someone had a videocam. we taped the art and the walk. then we went back to one of the guys kitchens to sit and enjoy a potluck dinner. there is nothing better than food, friends and photos. ahhhh..

9. Have a pot luck at your house and invite your friends. compose your menu to allow you to each make a dish that is unfamiliar. this will add to the fun. theme it interesting.  french, italian or greek are so passe’. why not go wild – tropical foods, arctic foods, raw foods, Live Food. yes you will eat and the experience of fellowship over food will expand when you each tell why you made the dish you presented. this kind of communal dinner is quite popular now in some areas.

we used to attend a wild game dinner each year – that consisted of only meats that were killed by the contributors.  We, the chefs prepared the feast for all the participants as our contribution. it’s still one of the hottest events every fall in our social circle.  at the end each person got a small momento booklet of the recipes from that night.  that was always a highlight.

10. Host a Fashion or Household Swap Party be sure to decide in advance what will be swapped. this will allow everyone to get and give their best exchanges. a group of my friends hold a jewelry swap party each fall. I get the nicest and most unusual pieces in the swaps. purses, and even clothes are popular at swap parties these days.

What to get the person who has everything? Simply: Nothing. Or, nothing directly. Instead, give a gift to someone who really needs it – a woman struggling to start a business in an impoverished country, clean water to a village suffering from cholera or any number of charitable donations. Changing the Present has dozens of ideas.

This one is quite close to my heart – gifting the Environment –

do it locally or globally, just do it.  plant a tree, give seeds, gardening gifts or even a gift donation to a local gardening club or the local county extention.  I took my master gardener class and my master canning class at the local county extention for basically nothing.  why not give them a hand to encourage greening of the earth this year, with a community garden contribution.

Rainforest Acre Adoption

Help make your loved one’s surroundings happier and maybe that can put a smile on their face. Adopt an acre in one of the “World’s Last Great Places” with The Nature Conservancy (nature.org, cost varies) or somewhere closer to home (find a local land trust with the Land Trust Alliance).

For the last Two Years we’ve contributed to the playpump project for my birthday. it made me so happy to know that the kids who are playing on the wheel are driving the pump to bring the water out of the freshly drilled clean water wells. many of these wells were drilled after Jay-Z joined with the World Water Foundation to promote the cause of Clean Water Globally For ALL. That one endorsement did a world of Good.

this is a totally old but reinvented project.  I so love this that it’s on my list for 2010 gifting ideas.  I think I’ll give both of my sisters trees for this mothers day’ and then give my brother a tree for fathers day.

I’ve given my sisters plants and even Hibiscus Hedges. one of my sisters gets an amaryllis yearly from me. which she has planted in her yard. some of them are 10 years old. my mom had plants from me in her yard, as she started the replant it tradition. when she died, I started giving plants to the rest of the women in my family, in rememberance of that tradition. this year, no doubt somebody will be getting a few trees planted in their name. hopefully one will be mine, especially in Ethiopia. that would be like reestablishing my roots in the motherland, literally.  WOW

Planting one tree is admirable but helping to reforest a nation is closer to miraculous. In places like Haiti and Ethiopia, deforestation has caused major hardships, like devastating mudslides and decimated farms. we happen to have quite a collection of soda bottles, so maybe it’s time to start making these oh so cool glasses.  no way you’d get these mixed up in your holiday drinking soirees’.  there are so many ways to give green from what you already have. take a look at the chopstick basket below; or the coasters, or the pet bed – all made from recyclables you may have laying around already.

Give “Experience” Gifts this Holiday If You’re Low on Cash [Gift Giving]

With excess cash in short supply these days, no one wants to feel like a gift given is unappreciated. Ensure the people on your gift-giving list enjoy themselves by giving an experience instead of stuff.

Money-wise weblog The Simple Dollar suggests experience-based gift giving is not only easier on the pocketbook, but will create a better experience for the recipient. The post offers a few reasons why:

Aside from the fact that it’s less expensive than giving traditional material gifts, giving experiences works for three reasons.

First, it doesn’t give a material item that the other person will have to deal with. It’s not going to wind up needing maintenance or taking up storage space in their home or requiring a trip to customer service.

Second, it will stand out in a positive way in comparison to the items they receive. When you receive several items for Christmas, something distinct like this will definitely stand out from the crowd. Most of the “experience” gifts I’ve ever received still stand out for me.

Third, it often allows you to experience the gift together. If the gift is an event you can both participate in, it becomes a shared memory, something far beyond what a material gift can offer.

In our own gift giving experiences, we’ve given dinners, movie tickets, zoo passes, and more manual labor than you can shake a stick at. Not only does it lighten your load for transporting or mailing gifts to their final destination, it usually requires a little more thought than standing in an aisle and deciding which gift your friends and family would appreciate more: smelly bath and body lotion, or hastily-signed gift card.

Hit up The Simple Dollar for a few ideas for kids and adults alike, when it comes to giving gifts of this nature.

The Miracle of Plumpy Nut has brought hope and life to many children in some of the most hunger ridden countries on the globe.

this is our third psa of the week and the most important we think.

today we think about the hungry and those who are in need of food. take a look at this video on the miracle of Plumpy Nut from Anderson Cooper produced by CBS News.

As You Can Clearly see, the miracle of the Peanut is one that we can see over and over, from generation to generation. when Dr. George Washington Carver started his experiments with the humble Peanut; it was called the Groundnut – as it was from it’s origins in Africa.

Slaves brought it with them to plant and use as a remedy for a myriad of purposes. many people extoll the value of this wonderful and nutritious legume; yet some of the most needy children in India are denied the use of Plumpy Nut by their Own Government. that’s just a shame. if children are starving give them at least a small staple to keep their brains and bodies functioning until they can fend better for themselves.

it’s the adults who refuse to act quickly enough for the malnourished children.. and why ?

many say it’s because of graft, or personal grudges against those who would present the food to the hungry. some say it’s mistrust of the sources of the food – saying it might not be halal – What ? it’s a peanut. what could be added to a peanut ?

Won’t You Help to Feed the Children and to recognize the need globally for food security. too many of us throw food away into the rubbish bin; each night after dinner. yet somewhere in the world a child goes hungry.

Friends, Bloggers, Visitors -  Isn’t it time we started looking at our part in ending world hunger, and doing more about it ?

Plumpy’nut is a peanut-based paste with the nutrition value of F-100 milk formula. Tasting like a slightly sweeter kind of peanut butter, it’s far more palatable than earlier efforts at a food based treatment for malnutrition. Plumpy’nut requires no preparation or mixing — it can be eaten right from the bag, actually — and is categorized by WHO as a Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF). Because plumpy’nut doesn’t require monitored mixing with clean water, it can be distributed directly to affected communities.

Plumpy’nut’s first major use was in Darfur, where over 300 metric tons have so far been distributed; as a result, malnutrition rates there have been cut in half. Plumpy’nut was also used in tsunami relief efforts, and in Malawi, “Project Peanut Butter” is making plumpy’nut with local materials:

Mark Manary, a pediatrician at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis established Project Peanut Butter in Malawi, in southern Africa. To reduce costs, it uses local ingredients as well as a mix of vitamins and minerals supplied by Nutriset. Dr. Manary hopes to crank out 150 metric tons a year to treat Malawi’s estimated 15,000 severely malnourished children. Dr. Manary initially used Plumpy’nut he’d received as a donation in 2001. Recovery rates soared to 95% from 25%. “We didn’t need a statistician to tell us this was better,” he says. “We figured if we wanted to continue, we needed to make it locally.”

A simple idea, well-executed, with significantly positive results and opportunities for local empowerment. Plumpy’nut may have an odd name, but it’s clearly a worldchanging idea.

It was officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992, but the first commemoration of the event took place in Paris, France, in 1987 when 100,000 people gathered on the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza at the Trocadéro to honour victims of poverty, hunger, violence and fear.

This morning, Greenpeace activists climbed to the roof of HP’s global headquarters in Palo Alto, California and painted “Hazardous Products” in enormous letters. It is a response to the fact that HP is backing away from a promise to exclude PVC and BFRs from their products by the end of the year. The Ponoko blog has a good roundup of incredible cardboard furniture, much of it from a collective of cardboard furniture makers in France known as Les Cartonnistes.

Some of the work of Les Cartonnistes is quite extraordinary, one would never recognize it as cardboard.
